Rye Football Club’s senior team beat Dromana today on a sunny but cool day at RJ Rowley Reserve Rye in an inaccurate kicking display – Rye 16-18-114 def Dromana 13-8-86.
Dromana outplayed Rye in the first quarter, with significantly more run and harder effort in and around the clearances. Whilst Rye kicked 2 goals, the forward line’s defensive work saw the ball rebounded by Dromana with too much ease. Dromana went to the first break with a 16 point lead.
Rye’s work rate significantly lifted in the second quarter, with Rye’s captain Adam Kirkwood dominating on the half back flank. A series of scores saw Rye reverse the first quarter’s deficit and take a 7 point lead into the main break. Had Rye kicked straight (scoring 5 goals 8 behinds in the 2nd quarter) the lead would have been more significant and put Dromana significantly on the back foot in the second half.
Rye outscored Dromana again in the third quarter, extending the lead at three quarter time to 16 points – and again 4 goals 4 behinds illustrated plenty of attack down Rye’s end but continued bad kicking.
A strong finish, with straighter kicking, in the last quarter saw Rye run out 28 point victors.
