Rye Football Club were defeated by Somerville Football Club at Somerville Recreation Reserve today. Final scores Somerville 19.17-131 def Rye 13.6-84.

In a lacklustre performance that was far from the fireworks being seen as part of the USA’s independence day celebrations (seriously … check out all the fireworks posts on Facebook and Twitter!), Rye succumbed to a significantly more focussed and switched on team. A late last quarter spate of goals from Rye’s Nathan Henley improved the final score line, but the serious damage was done in the second and third quarters, with Somerville’s significant lead at 3/4 time built on in the early part of the final quarter. Had Somerville kicked straighter earlier in the game, the scoreline would have been more brutal.

Ryan Mullet, Brady Egan and Sam Smith ran hard all day, and were clearly Rye’s best players.
